Beginnings…

'...beauty in the breakdown...' Frou Frou
This is the first filmed version of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland'
by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow made in 1903. I think this film is
fantastic especially as the quality of the film is disintegrating. I love
the breakdown of the film can be seen through the lines, the scratching,
flickering and fading as the old quality film is literally dying!

This idea of the lines disrupting the image inspires my work. Here is a
series I created with images taken from Tom Tykwer's 2000 film 'Der
Krieger und die Kaiserin' (The Princess and the Warrior) printed
56 x 118 cm with emulsion lines painted over:

Displayed in a row, more lines appear on each image as the viewer looks
across giving a sense that soon the images will be become harder to see
through the disruption of the lines.
